How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

If your smile is not as bright and white as you’d like, you’ve come to the right place. Main Street Dental Smiles is proud to offer safe and effective teeth whitening for results that are sure to dazzle. Talk to one of our team members to learn more about teeth whitening and what it can do for you.

How Do Teeth Become Stained and Discolored?

There are many reasons why teeth become stained and discolored over the years. These include the natural aging process, poor oral hygiene practices, constant exposure to pigmented foods and beverages, the use of tobacco products, excessive fluoride exposure in childhood (dental fluorosis), trauma, and certain illnesses and medications.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Teeth whitening involves placing a hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gel on the tooth surfaces. The bleaching agent penetrates the tooth enamel and breaks down the stains, leaving your teeth looking whiter and brighter.

Professional whitening works best on teeth yellowed over the years by regular exposure to staining agents. It does not work well on discoloration resulting from injuries, dental fluorosis, or the use of certain medications, including tetracycline. Bleaching works only on natural teeth, so it will not whiten dental restorations. If whitening is not right for you, our team may recommend a cosmetic dentistry solution, such as dental veneers, crowns, or cosmetic bonding, to restore your smile to its natural whiteness and brightness.

What Is the Whitening Procedure?

In-office, professional whitening is your best and safest option. The procedure starts with placing a protective barrier on the gums and applying the peroxide-based gel to your tooth surfaces. At Main Street Dental Smiles, we use only the best and most effective professional-grade bleaching agents to whiten and brighten your teeth several shades in just one office visit.

If you’d rather bleach your teeth at home, we are more than happy to provide you with custom-fitted trays and professional whitening gel. While it may take a little longer than in-office whitening to achieve your desired results, you’ll eventually enjoy beautifully white and bright teeth.

Is Teeth Whitening Safe?

We do not recommend over-the-counter and do-it-yourself whitening products. While some may deliver whitening results, many are sure to disappoint, and some and may even harm your gums and teeth. On the other hand, teeth whitening performed under the care of an experienced dental professional is a safe and effective way to brighten your smile. Some patients report tooth sensitivity, but this temporary side effect soon subsides without intervention.
