Reasons for an Extraction
- Extensive decay: untreated decay can infect the pulp. If treatment keeps getting put off, the damage may go past the point of saving the tooth.
- Gum disease: advanced gum disease erodes the bone and tissue that hold teeth, leaving them loose.
- A broken tooth: some fractures, especially below the gum line, cannot be repaired.

What to Expect
Thanks to modern anesthetics, sedation and technique, most patients feel little or no discomfort during or after an extraction. A simple extraction removes a tooth that is visible and easy to reach. A surgical extraction is needed for a weak, impacted or badly damaged tooth, or one broken at or below the gum line.
Healing Well
We will give you aftercare instructions and may prescribe pain medication if needed. For at least 24 hours, avoid straws, smoking, spitting and vigorous rinsing so the blood clot stays in place and you avoid a painful dry socket. Call us if pain, swelling or bleeding increases, or if anything worries you.
