Gum Disease Treatment in Whitesboro

Gum disease starts quietly. Plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that forms on teeth every day, irritates the gums and leads to gingivitis: gums that look red, feel swollen and bleed easily. Caught at this stage, gingivitis can be reversed with treatment and careful brushing and flossing.

When Gingivitis Becomes Periodontitis

Left untreated, gingivitis can turn into periodontitis. The gums pull away from the teeth and leave pockets where bacteria collect, and over time that leads to bone loss and lost teeth. Watch for:

  • Gaps where the gums have pulled back
  • A metallic taste in your mouth
  • Sensitivity when you chew
  • Bad breath that does not go away (halitosis)

Why Gum Health Matters for Your Whole Body

Research has linked periodontal disease to diabetes, stroke, heart disease and other serious conditions. Gum disease can also cause problems during pregnancy.

Scaling and Root Planing

Treatment usually starts with a nonsurgical deep cleaning. Scaling removes plaque and tartar above and below the gum line. Root planing smooths rough spots on the roots so the gums can reattach to clean surfaces.

Antibiotics

In some cases we add an oral or topical antibiotic to the deep cleaning to control the infection and slow the disease.

Surgical Care

If inflammation and deep pockets remain after treatment, we may recommend surgery. Your plan is built around what gives you the best result.

Keeping Gum Disease Under Control

After treatment, home care does a lot of the work: brush and floss every day and rinse with an antimicrobial mouthwash to reach bacteria in hard-to-clean areas.

We will likely see you for periodontal maintenance every three to four months instead of the usual six. At each visit we clean thoroughly, check your gums for recession and measure the pockets, so the disease does not progress and your gums and bone stay healthy.
