Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. It affects nearly half of Americans age 30 and older and about 70 percent of adults 65 and older. That is why prevention, treatment and management of gum disease are a big part of what we do.
How Gum Disease Starts
It begins when plaque, a sticky film of bacteria, irritates the gums. The earliest stage, gingivitis, causes red, swollen, bleeding gums. The good news: treatment and careful home care can usually reverse it.
How It Affects Your Oral Health
Untreated gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which cannot be reversed. The gums pull away from the teeth and form pockets that trap bacteria and debris. Signs include:
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- A metallic taste in the mouth
- Receding gums
- Gaps where the gums have pulled back
- Tooth sensitivity
- Loose teeth
Left alone, periodontitis keeps destroying the bone and tissue that support the teeth, which can lead to tooth loss. Research has also linked gum disease to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and problems during pregnancy.
Treatment
The most effective first step is a nonsurgical deep cleaning called scaling and root planing. Scaling removes plaque and tartar on the teeth and below the gum line. Root planing smooths rough spots on the roots so plaque has a harder time sticking and the gums can reattach. Some cases also need oral or topical antibiotics, and if infection persists, surgery may be recommended.
After Treatment
Careful home care is essential to keep the disease from coming back. We will likely recommend periodontal maintenance visits every three months instead of the usual six.
