What Is Gum Disease?
Gum disease is an infection and inflammation of the gums, bone and tissue that hold the teeth. It is usually painless at first, so it often goes unnoticed. The main cause is plaque that is not removed by brushing, flossing and professional cleanings. It hardens into tartar, the gums pull away and pockets form.
As the pockets deepen, bacteria thrive and the supporting bone and tissue break down, leading to bone loss, loose teeth and eventually tooth loss.
Symptoms
Early gum disease (gingivitis) causes red, tender, swollen and bleeding gums. Later signs include lasting bad breath, a bad taste, receding gums, longer-looking teeth, loose teeth and a bite that no longer fits together the same way. The sooner treatment starts, the better.
Treatment
We start with scaling and root planing, a nonsurgical deep cleaning of the teeth and roots above and below the gum line that helps the gums heal and discourages new plaque. Some cases also need antibiotics or surgery.
Can It Be Cured?
Gingivitis can often be reversed. Once gum disease advances, it cannot be fully cured, but a periodontal maintenance plan can keep it from getting worse: careful home care plus exams and cleanings every three to four months.
