If your teeth have become more sensitive to hot and cold, or they look longer than they used to, your gums may be receding and exposing the roots. A tissue graft can restore your gum health and the look of your smile.
Why Gums Recede
Recession usually comes from periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease. As the gums pull away from the teeth, deep pockets form, bacteria collect, and the bone and tissue supporting the teeth break down. The gums shrink back, exposing the roots.
Other contributors include genetics, poor oral hygiene, brushing too hard, tobacco use, certain illnesses, misaligned teeth, injury, clenching and grinding (bruxism) and past orthodontic treatment.
What Is a Tissue Graft?
A tissue graft uses healthy tissue to rebuild the gum where it has receded. It covers the exposed root, restores your natural gum line and protects the tooth. The type we recommend depends on your needs:
- Connective tissue graft: the most common approach when there is not enough gum tissue near the area. Tissue is taken from under a small flap on the roof of the mouth and attached around the exposed root.
- Free gingival graft: tissue is taken directly from the roof of the mouth. It suits patients with thin gums who need more tissue.
- Pedicle graft: tissue comes from the gum next to the tooth being repaired. It works only when there is plenty of gum tissue nearby.
