Why Would a Tooth Require Extraction?

We always look for the most conservative way to save a damaged tooth. Sometimes, though, removing it is the only good option. When that happens, our team works to make the experience a positive one.

Common Reasons for an Extraction

  • Tooth damage: deep decay or an infection that does not respond to medication or a root canal, or a broken tooth that cannot be restored.
  • Periodontal disease: advanced gum disease (periodontitis) destroys the bone and tissue that hold teeth in place.
  • Orthodontic treatment: a tooth may be removed if it blocks another from coming in, or to make room in a crowded mouth.
  • Wisdom teeth: they sit far back, are hard to clean and often lack room, so they come in crooked or get stuck (impacted). See wisdom teeth extraction.

What to Expect

There are two kinds of extraction. A simple extraction removes a tooth that is visible and easy to reach. A surgical extraction is needed when a tooth is weak, impacted or broken at the gum line. Gentle technique and sedation options keep pain, discomfort and downtime to a minimum.

Caring for Yourself Afterward

We will give you instructions to help you heal. For at least 48 hours, do not drink through a straw, spit hard or smoke; any of these can dislodge the blood clot in the socket and cause a painful condition called dry socket.

Call us right away if you have severe pain, bleeding, shortness of breath, fever, vomiting, swelling, or redness that is getting worse.
