When Should I Schedule My Child’s First Dental Visit?

Caring for your child’s teeth starts earlier than many parents expect. Good habits at home and twice-yearly dental visits work together to set up a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Why Baby Teeth Matter

Baby teeth will eventually fall out, but they still need care. They help your child learn to speak and move on to solid food. A decayed or painful tooth can make eating hard, and early decay can even damage the adult teeth still forming underneath.

If a baby tooth is lost too early, neighboring teeth can drift into the gap and cause crooked teeth and bite problems that need orthodontic treatment later.

When to Book the First Visit

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first dental visit when the first tooth comes in, and no later than the first birthday. If your child is older and has not been to the dentist yet, now is the time.

After that, we recommend exams and cleanings every six months. Call us sooner if you notice white spots on the teeth, sores, a bluish bruise where a tooth is coming in, or anything else that worries you.

What Happens at the First Visit

We do a gentle but thorough exam to make sure your child’s teeth, gums, bite and development are on track. We also talk about brushing, nutrition, pacifier use, teething, fluoride and preventive care, and answer your questions.
