When to Schedule the First Visit
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a first visit within six months of the first tooth, or by the first birthday, whichever comes first. Early visits let us track development, catch problems early, share home-care tips and help your child get comfortable with the dentist.
What Happens at the First Visit
The first visit is usually short. We make sure your child is comfortable, take a health history and ask about any concerns. Then we gently examine the mouth, gums and jaw, check for decay, look at the bite and make sure development is on track.
Afterward we share what we saw and may recommend preventive or restorative care. We can also talk about nutrition, teething, pacifiers, thumb-sucking and caring for your child’s teeth at home.
Preventive Care for Kids
- Exams: a full check of teeth, gums, lips and development, with digital X-rays when needed.
- Cleanings: our hygienist removes plaque and tartar, flosses and polishes, and shows good home habits.
- Fluoride: strengthens enamel and can help reverse the earliest signs of decay.
- Sealants: a protective coating over the grooves of back teeth that lowers the risk of cavities.
- Mouthguards: custom sports guards and night guards for kids who grind.
