What Is an Abscessed Tooth?
An abscess is a pocket of pus at or around the root of a tooth, caused by a bacterial infection. It can be moderately to severely painful and is a dental emergency.
Symptoms
- Persistent, throbbing tooth pain
- Red, swollen gums or a pimple-like bump on the gum
- Sensitivity to hot and cold
- A bitter taste in the mouth
- A darkened or loose tooth
- Swelling in the face, neck or jaw
- Bad breath that lingers
- Tender or swollen lymph nodes in the neck or under the jaw

The Dangers of Waiting
Without prompt treatment, the infection can spread into the jawbone and cause bone and tooth loss, and damage the teeth and tissue around it. It can also spread to the head and neck. In rare cases, an untreated abscess leads to a life-threatening infection called sepsis.
Treatment
Most abscesses are treated with a root canal: we make a small opening to drain the abscess and remove the damaged pulp, fill and seal the canals, and place a crown for protection. If the tooth cannot be saved, we extract it and drain the infection. Antibiotics may also be prescribed.
