Deep sleep lets your body rest, repair and recharge, and it improves your health, mood and focus. Sleep apnea disrupts all of that. Main Street Dental Smiles offers oral appliance therapy to help.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
Do you snore loudly and wake up drained? Sleep apnea causes repeated pauses in breathing at night, usually because the throat muscles relax and soft tissue blocks the airway. Your brain senses the drop in oxygen and wakes you briefly to breathe, sometimes hundreds of times a night.
Health Risks
Sleep apnea affects your mental, emotional and physical health. Tiredness raises the risk of driving and workplace accidents, and poor sleep and low oxygen can worsen conditions such as asthma, COPD, obesity, acid reflux, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and liver problems.
Symptoms
Most people learn they have it from a partner or family member. The most common signs are loud snoring and daytime sleepiness. Others include waking up choking or gasping, morning headaches, a sore throat or dry mouth, trouble concentrating, memory problems, anxiety, mood changes and unexplained weight gain.
Treatment
CPAP machines push air through a mask to keep the airway open, but many patients find them noisy and bulky and do not sleep better. We offer oral appliance therapy instead: a mandibular advancement device or a soft tissue repositioning appliance, depending on your needs.
