Dental Implant Bone Grafting: How Does It Help?

Implants are the gold standard for replacing teeth, but they depend on enough healthy bone. If you have lost bone, Dr. Schilling may recommend a bone graft so you can still enjoy the benefits of implants.

Why You Might Need a Graft

Common reasons include a tooth missing for a long time, bone infection or defects, acid erosion, deep decay, cracked teeth, untreated gum disease and poorly fitting dentures. You may also need one if the bone is too thin, short or weak to hold an implant.

The Grafting Process

It starts with a consultation. Dr. Schilling checks the density and quality of your bone. If it is not enough, a graft builds it up for a successful implant.

Graft materials include synthetic, ceramic, animal-based and polymer options, as well as your own bone (an autologous graft). She will explain the pros and cons of each.

Grafting is a simple surgical procedure done in our Whitesboro office under local anesthesia. A small incision in the gum gives access to the bone, the sterile graft material is placed, and over time your body builds new bone around it.

Why a Prosthodontist?

Prosthodontists complete three years of training after dental school focused on restoring and replacing teeth, which prepares them for complex cases. Dr. Schilling uses current technology and techniques to deliver natural-looking, functional smiles.
