Bad breath (halitosis) often comes from oral hygiene, but not always. Dry mouth, gum disease or even a health problem elsewhere in the body can be the cause. If it will not go away, we can help.
Common Causes
- Oral hygiene: skipped brushing, flossing and checkups let plaque and tartar collect on the teeth, gums and tongue, where odor-causing bacteria thrive.
- Strong foods: garlic, onions and some spices linger until your body clears them.
- Dry mouth: medications or salivary gland problems reduce saliva, so the mouth cannot clean itself.
- Dental problems: gum disease, decay, infections, damaged restorations or ill-fitting appliances.
- Tobacco: causes bad breath, stains teeth and raises the risk of many diseases.
- Health conditions and medications: including chronic bronchitis, sinus or lung infections, diabetes, digestive disorders, and kidney or liver disease.
How to Improve Your Breath
- Cut back on strong-smelling foods and avoid tobacco.
- Brush twice a day for two minutes, including your tongue.
- Use an antibacterial mouthwash daily.
- Drink plenty of water to prevent dry mouth.
If it persists, schedule a visit. We will look for the cause and tailor a treatment plan, and if needed, refer you to your healthcare provider to rule out a medical cause.
