Inside every tooth is a chamber holding soft pulp, blood vessels and nerves. Endodontic treatment addresses pulp that is infected or inflamed, usually from deep decay, chips or cracks, injury or repeated dental work.
Untreated pulp damage can cause pain, swelling, an abscess and bone loss around the root, and the infection can reach the bloodstream. The only alternative to treatment is extraction, and a lost tooth should then be replaced with a bridge or implant to avoid the problems a gap causes.

What to Expect
Root canal treatment is straightforward and relatively painless. We numb the tooth and offer sedation if you want it. Through a small opening, we remove the damaged pulp, clean, shape and disinfect the space, fill the canals with gutta-percha and seal them to prevent reinfection.
A treated tooth can be more likely to fracture, so we usually add a crown. With good care, the tooth can last a lifetime.
