Dental anxiety affects millions of people. At Main Street Dental Smiles, we work hard to help every patient feel at ease, and our sedation options can help even very anxious patients relax.
Understanding Dental Anxiety
Dental anxiety ranges from mild to severe: fear, dread, nervousness and unease about going to the dentist. Common triggers include the sounds and smells of the office, the sight of instruments and memories of bad experiences. Many people avoid the dentist altogether, which leads to bigger problems later.
What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation uses medication to help you relax during treatment. It helps people with strong anxiety, a strong gag reflex, very sensitive teeth, trouble getting numb or past bad experiences, and those who need long or complex procedures. If you are nervous about a visit, tell us. We will go over your options.
Types of Sedation
- Nitrous oxide: laughing gas mixed with oxygen, breathed through a nose mask. It relaxes you while a local anesthetic prevents pain, and it wears off quickly, so you can drive home.
- Oral sedation: a pill before your visit. You may feel drowsy or doze lightly but still respond to directions. It lasts several hours, so you need a driver.
- IV sedation: medication delivered directly into the bloodstream. You feel relaxed and remember little or nothing of the treatment. Plan for a trusted adult to drive you home and stay with you until it wears off.
