What Is Dry Mouth?
Dry mouth happens when the salivary glands do not make enough saliva. Saliva neutralizes the acids bacteria produce and washes away food and germs, so without it, the risk of decay and gum disease goes up.
People with dry mouth are more prone to plaque buildup, thrush, cracked lips, mouth sores, a grooved tongue and bad breath. Many also have trouble chewing and swallowing, a dry or sore throat, a hoarse voice, stringy saliva, changes in taste and smell, and trouble wearing dentures.
Causes
Dehydration, aging, tobacco, alcohol, snoring and mouth breathing can all cause it. It is also a side effect of many medications and a symptom of conditions such as diabetes, Sjögren’s syndrome, stroke and autoimmune diseases.
Managing It at Home
Sip water through the day and rinse after meals. Sugar-free candy, sugarless gum and mouthwash with xylitol can help, as can cutting back on caffeine, alcohol and tobacco.
Treatment
If dry mouth persists, we will look at your needs and recommend treatment, such as a prescription gel or artificial saliva, a medicated or fluoride rinse to protect your enamel, or in some cases medication to stimulate saliva.
If we suspect one of your medications is to blame, we may refer you to your healthcare provider. Never change or stop a prescription without talking to your doctor first.
