Why Teeth Stain and Discolor

How Whitening Works
Whitening uses a hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide gel applied to the surface of the teeth. The gel passes into the enamel and breaks up the stains, leaving teeth whiter and brighter.
It works best on teeth that have yellowed over the years from everyday staining. It does not do much for discoloration from injuries, fluorosis or medications such as tetracycline, and it only whitens natural teeth, not fillings or crowns. If whitening is not the right fit, we may suggest veneers, crowns or cosmetic bonding instead.
The Whitening Procedure
In-office whitening is the fastest and safest option. We protect your gums with a barrier, then apply a professional-grade peroxide gel. Teeth are typically several shades whiter after one visit.
Prefer to whiten at home? We make custom trays and provide professional gel. It takes a little longer than the in-office treatment, but the results are just as bright.
Is Whitening Safe?
We do not recommend over-the-counter or do-it-yourself kits. Some work a little, many disappoint, and some can harm your teeth and gums. Whitening supervised by a dental professional is safe and effective. Some patients notice temporary sensitivity, which goes away on its own.
