Saving a natural tooth and restoring its health is our top priority here at Main Street Dental Smiles. Our gentle approach and sedation options will ensure you enjoy a positive and anxiety-free experience. You can count on us for care that exceeds your expectations!

Why Would a Tooth Require Extraction?

The following are some common reasons a tooth may require extraction:

Tooth Damage: Extraction may be unavoidable due to deep decay, which can cause extensive damage, or advanced periodontal (gum) disease, which can erode the bone and tissue supporting the tooth. Severely infected teeth that do not respond to medication or root canal therapy or fractured, broken, or injured teeth may also require extraction to provide symptom relief when no restorative option is available.

Orthodontic Treatment:  Extracting a tooth is often a component of orthodontic treatment. A tooth that is blocking a permanent one from coming in correctly may require removal, as do some teeth in the event of crowding to make the necessary space for the remaining teeth to shift into alignment.

Wisdom Teeth: One of the most common oral surgeries performed is wisdom teeth extraction. These molars, being so far in the back of the mouth, are hard to clean, leaving them vulnerable to decay and infection. Moreover, most people don't have enough space to accommodate their wisdom teeth, often resulting in them coming in at a wrong angle or being impacted (trapped in the jaw). These problematic teeth can lead to a host of oral health conditions, so in some cases, we may recommend extracting them to safeguard your smile.

What Is the Extraction Procedure?

Depending on your unique needs, you may require a simple or surgical tooth extraction. A simple extraction is performed on teeth that are easily accessible and visible above the gum line. A surgical extraction, on the other hand, may be needed to remove a weak or impacted tooth or one that is fractured at the gum line. With today's advances in dental technology and the sedation dentistry options we offer, most patients report minimal pain or discomfort during and after extraction.

How Can You Help Promote Healing After Tooth Extraction?

Make sure to follow the post-operative directions we provide to help promote healing. It's important to refrain from drinking from a straw, forceful spitting, vigorous rinsing, or smoking for at least 48 hours to prevent the dislodging of the blood clot forming in the tooth socket. Otherwise, you risk developing a very painful condition called dry socket, which would require in-office treatment.

Make sure to contact our office immediately if you have severe pain or bleeding or if you develop fever, vomiting, shortness of breath, chest pain, or swelling, and redness that gets worse, not better at the extraction site.

Healthy Habits for Healthy Smiles

Make sure to brush and floss regularly, and don't forget to schedule your twice-a-year dental exams and cleanings at Main Street Dental Smiles. We will monitor your oral health and address any condition early on before it progresses and requires extraction.
